Lady Raiders Aim for First Ever Big 12 Championship This Weekend
April 18, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team will look for its first-ever Big 12 Championship this weekend when the 20th-ranked Lady Raiders tee off the conference tournament Friday morning at The Harvester in Rhodes, Iowa.
Tech will be the No. 4 seed in the nine-team field, joining fifth-seed Baylor and No. 6 Iowa State in the opening-round pairing. The Cyclones are hosting the tournament at The Harvester for the first time since 2001 when the Lady Raiders finished eighth overall.
"I really like where our team is heading into this weekend," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We expect to compete for the title, and I think our players have that mindset going into the tournament. The biggest key is getting off to a good start so that we're in contention heading into the final round."
Robertson will send an experienced lineup into the championships that consists of seniors Kim Kaufman and Gabby Dominguez along with junior Beverly Mendoza, sophomore Elin Arvidsson and freshman Kimmy Hill.
Dominguez, Kaufman and Mendoza were all in the lineup at last year's Big 12 Championships in Lawrence, Kan., where the Lady Raiders finished seventh overall. Arvidsson, meanwhile, picked up considerable experience by participating in the NCAA West Regional several weeks later.
Kaufman enters this weekend as the third-highest ranked player in the field as she is No. 17 in the latest Golfweek individual poll behind third-ranked Kelsey Vines (Oklahoma State) and No. 6 Chirapat Jao-Javanil (Oklahoma).
The Lady Raiders have finished no higher than third (1999) all-time at the Big 12 Championships. Tech turned in fifth and sixth place finishes in each of Robertson's first two seasons in 2010 and 2011.
Tech will tee off at 9:20 a.m. Friday morning to begin the 54-hole tournament. Fans can keep up with the action throughout the weekend at www.golfstat.com.
