BOULDER, Colorado - Led by senior Brooke Lowrance's blistering 71, the No. 44 Texas Tech women's golf team finished the first round of the Big 12 Women's Golf Tournament alone in second place, five strokes behind leader and seventh-ranked nationally Oklahoma State University.

Tech shot an opening round total of 301 at the 6166 yard, par 72 Boulder Country Club. Oklahoma State shot 296.

The individual leader is Maria Boden of Oklahoma St. She shot a two-under-par 70 which tops Lowrance by one stroke. Boden's OSU teammate Eva-Lotta Stromid is third at 73.

Lowrance's one-under-par 71 was good for second place in the opening round of the tournament. Not far behind Lowrance are teammates Jamie Vannoy and Beth Covington. They both fired rounds of 76 which tied them for 10th place overall. Freshman Jennifer Newhouse tied for 27th place after shooting a solid 78. Heather Wrede came in with a score of 82 tying her for 51st.

The three-day tournament will continue with 18 holes tomorrow, April 20 with the first tee time slated for 8:30 am. The event will conclude with 18 holes on Wednesday, April 21.
