Lady Raiders Advance to NCAA Regional For Third-Straight Year
April 30, 2012 NCAA Regional Selections | Colorado National Golf Club LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's golf team earned its third-straight postseason selection Monday night as the Lady Raiders were picked as the No. 10 seed in the West Regional during the NCAA Selection Show. The Lady Raiders will battle 23 other teams May 10-12 at the Colorado National Golf Club, located in Erie, Colo., with the top eight teams advancing to the NCAA Championships. "We are very pleased to be selected to the West Regional," Tech head coach JoJo Robertson said. "We feel good about the golf course since three of our players have already played it. On top of that, several of the teams in this regional are ones we've seen throughout the year." Tech last played the Colorado National Golf Club in October 2009 when the Lady Raiders claimed the Heather Farr Memorial Classic title, the program's first tournament crown under Robertson in only her second event as head coach. Kim Kaufman, Gabby Dominguez, and Beverly Mendoza were freshmen that year with all three placing among the top 25 individuals. To advance to only the school's second NCAA Championships appearance, Tech will have to battle a tough field that includes defending national champion UCLA as the No. 1 seed followed by LSU, North Carolina, and host Colorado.
"We realize we have an opportunity to do something special that hasn't been done in a while," Robertson said. "I know our players are excited and hopefully we can go take advantage of this opportunity." The NCAA Championships will be held May 22-25 at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin, Tenn. Tech's only appearance in the championships came in 1996 after the Lady Raiders finished ninth at the West Regional held in Omaha, Neb. Tech is coming off a seventh place finish Sunday at the Big 12 Championships in Lawrence, Kan. where the Lady Raiders battled bitter conditions to finish 20 strokes back of tournament winner Oklahoma.
