HOUSTON, Texas - The 42nd-ranked Texas Tech women's golf team began play in the 1999 NCAA Women's Golf Championship West Regional by shooting an opening round total of 312, placing it in a tie for 12th place with the University of Tulsa.

The tournament is being held at the 6119 yard, par 72 Pine Forest Country Club. Texas A&M is the host school.

Junior Jamie Vannoy was the top Red Raider and is tied for 31st overall with a 77. Senior Brooke Lowrance and junior Heather Wrede are tied for 44th place. Both finished the day at 78. Senior Beth Covington carded a 79 which was good for a tie at 59th. Freshman Jennifer Newhouse shot an 88 placing her 101st.

Stanford leads the event after shooting a four-over-par total of 292. Arizona State and USC are tied for second at 299.

The individual leader is Arizona's Jenna Daniels who shot a two-under-par 70. USC's Nicole Dalkas, Nevada's Angie Yoon and Sasha Medina of New Mexico St. are all one stroke back at 71.

The top 10 teams and two individuals will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 19-22 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, joining the top nine squads and two individuals from the NCAA East Regional.

The three-day tournament will continue with 18 holes tomorrow, May 7 with the first tee time slated for 7:30 am.
