LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfer Kim Kaufman advanced to the match play quarterfinals Thursday at the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship after defeating both Demi Frances Runas and Allisen Corpus.
With the two victories, Kaufman moves on to face Lilia Kha-Tu Vu at 6:50 a.m. CT Friday morning at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station, N.J.
Kaufman opened the day with a dominating performance over Runas where the junior was 6-under-par when the match was halted with Kaufman leading by three holes with only two to play. She led by as much as five holes during the back nine in what was her biggest margin of victory in the tournament.
The Clark, S.D. native carried that momentum into her afternoon match with Corpus that went back-and-forth before Kaufman sunk birdies on the par-3 12th and the par-5 14th to go up two holes late in the round.
Kaufman held onto the two-hole lead with pars on her next three holes, ending the match with the 18th still to play. She finished with 11 birdies and only three bogeys over 33 holes Friday, easily one of the most impressive performances this week.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds of the tournament will both be played Friday with the championship match set to tee off at 7 a.m. CT Saturday morning.
