LUBBOCK, Texas - In her first career major championship appearance, Texas Tech golfer Gabby Dominguez fired an 8-over 80 card in Thursday's U.S. Women's Open first round in Kohler, Wisc.
Playing at challenging Blackwolf Run, Dominguez opened with a birdie on her opening hole, the par-5 10th, before recording bogeys on three of her next six holes. She was briefly ranked among the top amateurs in the field before moving to the difficult front nine.
Dominguez had bogeys on four of her first six holes after making the turn. Her only other birdie during the round came on the par-5 7th, leaving the junior tied for 126th heading into Friday's second round.
She will have some work to do to make the weekend cut, likely needing an even or under-par round to continue into Saturday and Sunday. Only 14 participants in the 156-player field managed to shoot under par Thursday.
Professionals Lizette Salas, Brittany Linciocome, and Cristie Kerr shared the first-day lead with 3-under cards. Emma Talley provided the lowest card from the amateur ranks as she finished with a 1-over 73.
Dominguez will start from the first hole Friday morning in the 9:12 a.m. pairing. ESPN2 will be once again providing live coverage beginning at 3 p.m.
