Beverly Mendoza qualified for the U.S. Women's Amateur on Wednesday.

July 13, 2012

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech golfer Beverly Mendoza qualified this week for the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship after finishing fourth at the Shawnee Mission, Kan. sectional held at the Meadowbrook Country Club.

The sophomore recorded an even-par 72 card Wednesday in order to qualify as she finished two strokes back of medalist Madeleine Sheils and just one stroke up on the sectional's two alternates, Emma Lavy and Jayde Panos.

Mendoza becomes the fourth Lady Raider to qualify for a top amateur tournament this summer, joining Kim Kaufman and Gabby Dominguez who played in the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and then Elin Arvidsson who participated in the British Amateur Open Championship.

The Philippines native was a regular in the Tech lineup this past season as she competed in nine events, averaging 75.4 swings per round, which was the third-lowest stroke average on the team. She finished in the top 20 twice on the year and in the top 30 seven times as well.

The U.S. Women's Amateur Championship will be played Aug. 6-12 at The Country Club in Cleveland, Ohio with the Golf Channel providing live coverage throughout the tournament.
