Red Raiders Open Big 12 Play with Oklahoma, Oklahoma State

The Texas Tech women's team will begin Big 12 play this weekend as they travel to Oklahoma to take on the University of Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

On Sept. 5, the Red Raiders will face the Oklahoma Sooners at 4 p.m. Last season, the Sooners went 1-13 and did not participate in Big 12 competition. Against Big 12 team, Oklahoma recorded a 0-4 mark. Senior defender Sheri Whaley and sophomore defender Natalie Hixson are the team's top returners. Kathleen Peay, a midfielder from Richardson and Heather Morrison, a midfielder from Plano are two of the Sooners' top newcomers. The Sooners are 0-1 on the season and in conference play after losing 2-1 to nationally ranked Texas A&M. The meeting between Tech and OU will mark the first in school history.

Tech will turn around and play Oklahoma State on Sept. 7 at 1 p.m. in Stillwater. Tech holds a 1-0 series record over the Cowgirls. In their last meeting on Sept. 15, 1996, the Red Raiders shutout OSU 3-0 in Lubbock.

Last season, the Cowgirls went 10-7-2 on the year and 1-6-2 in Big 12 play. Sophomore forward Sally Holmes is the top returner for OSU. Holmes scored 13 goals and assisted on five others. Senior defender Miche' Garrison put in five goals and eight assists last season. Oklahoma State is currently 1-0 on the season after defeating Northwestern State on Sunday.

"The goal we have set for ourselves is to win the Big 12 Conference and this coming weekend is the first step toward that goal," Texas Tech Head Coach Felix Oskam said.

Did you know... Red Raider sophomore forward Kristy Frantz was a member of the Braddock Road Lightning club soccer team that finished second at Nationals this summer. In 1995, the same team finished third in Nationals.

Frantz, the only Texas Tech soccer player from Virginia, also played field hockey while attending high school at Hayfield Secondary in Alexandria. She earned Most Improved honors after the 1994-95 season.

Big 12 Soccer Championship
The 1997 Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship will be held November 6, 7, 9 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The top six teams based on regular season results will qualify for the tournament. A point system used throughout the season will determine those teams and their respective seedings.

Friday:
Game 3- 5 p.m. -Seed 1 v. Winner game 2
Game 4- 7:30 p.m.-Seed 2 v. Winner game 1
