Red Raiders Prepare to Spook Stephen F. Austin

While others may be trick or treating, the Red Raider soccer team will be in Nacogdoches battling Stephen F. Austin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 31. The Ladyjacks are currently 6-8-1 on the season.

Tech holds a 1-0 series record over Stephen F. Austin. In their last meeting, Tech captured a 10-0 shutout victory on Sept. 29, 1995 in Lubbock. Amy Rutstein had a school record four goals, while Kristi Patterson added two and Christine Messner, Stacy Livingston, Lauri Perry and Cathy Miller added one apiece. The win stands as the largest margin of victory in Tech soccer history.

Tech battles Centenary in final match of season Texas Tech will end their 1997 season on Nov. 2 as they play the Centenary Ladies at 1 p.m. in Shreveport, La. Centenary is 12-2 on the season. They are led by Holly Duncan who has 12 goals and three assists for a total of 27 points. Jacintha Wick also has 27 points, with 11 goals and five assists. Goalkeeper Katie Bowman has started in 12 games for the ladies. She has 37 saves and 11 goals against. Her goals against average for the season is 1.34. The Red Raiders met Centenary twice in 1995. The series record stands at 1-1. On Oct. 29, Tech shutout the Ladies 2-0. Christine Messner and Amy Rutstein scored for Tech, while Kristi Patterson recorded an assist. In their first meeting, on Oct. 1, Tech was out scored 4-2. Scoring for the Red Raiders was Amy Rutstein and Christine Messner.

One for the Record Books The Red Raider soccer program is in its fourth year of existence. Each season brings added names to the record books and this season is no different. Here's a look at some records set this season. * Kristy Frantz now holds the number one and number two spots on Tech's single season points list. She scored 44 last season and already has 31 this season. She bumps former Red Raider Kristi Patterson, who scored 27 in 1994, to third. * Frantz has also moved herself into second place on the single season goals list. This year she has scored 13 for Tech. As a freshman she set the record with 18. * The Red Raider squad set a record for the most goals scored in a conference game. On Sept. 14, Tech defeated Missouri 4-3. The previous record was three goals against Oklahoma State in 1996. * Kristy Frantz now holds the school record for most points scored in a conference game. She recorded two goals and an assist for five points against Missouri on Sept. 14. The previous mark was four points against Colorado and Oklahoma State set in 1996 by Frantz. * The Red Raiders have taken 55 corner kicks so far this season. That mark is the lowest in the program's history. In 1994, tech took 66 corner kicks, while in 1995, they recorded a team high 155. Last season the Red Raiders had 119. * The Red Raiders had an average of 352 fans attend their Big 12 home games. That was an improvement over last seasons average of 328.2.

Texas A&M top seed in Big 12 Championships With Big 12 Conference play over, the six qualifiers for the Big 12 Soccer Championships have been set. Texas A&M will be the top seed in the tournament and will face the winner of the Texas-Colorado game on Nov. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Number two seed Nebraska will face the winner of the Baylor-Iowa State game at 5 p.m. on the seventh as well. The winners of those two games will square off on Nov. 9 at 1:30 p.m. in the championship game.

Season Notes Feshman defender Kelly Taylor recorded her first career start against Colorado College on Oct. 17. Taylor also started against Colorado on Oct. 19. Sophomore defender Jamie Woods scored the second goal of her career against Colorado. Woods, a former walk-on, has started in 15 of 16 games this season for Tech. She started in 11 games last season, but did not score.

Did you know... Goalkeeper Kellie McCallister is a walk-on who claimed the top spot for Tech this season. She has started in 13 games and played a total of 1,212 minutes. McCallister has a goals against average of 2.30. She has 71 saves and 31 goals against. So far this season, she has been responsible for two of Tech's three shutouts. At Albuquerque's La Cueva High School, McCallister played on three State Championship squads. She was an All-State pick as a junior and senior. The 5-3 freshman is an Arts and Sciences major who hopes to one day be a veterinarian.

Big 12 Soccer Championship
    The 1997 Big 12 Conference Soccer Championship will be held November 6, 7, 9 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas. The top six teams based on regular season results will qualify for the tournament. A point system used throughout the season will determine those teams and their respective seedings.
    The bracketing will be as follows:
