Mygatt Scores Lone Goal in 1-1 Draw
Sept. 5, 2008
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team opened the Middle Tennessee Soccer Classic Friday night with a 1-1 double-overtime draw against the host Middle Tennessee State at Blue Raider Field. The tie moves the Red Raiders to 2-1-1 overall on the season, while Middle Tennessee remains winless at 0-2-2. The Blue Raiders would get on the board first in the 28th minute on a Shan Jones goal from 15 yards out off a Vanessa Mueggler pass. The goal was the first allowed by Tech against a non-conference opponent this season. The Red Raiders would even the match in the 74th minute as freshman Kendyl Mygatt would take the rebound off a Taylor Lytle shot off the crossbar and connect on her second goal of the season. Neither Middle Tennessee nor Tech would be able to create any offense for the remainder of regulation or overtime, however, as the Red Raiders earned their first draw of the season. Red Raider defender Brittney Harrison would have a breakaway in the second overtime, but the shot attempt was wide. Tech ended the match with a 25-18 shot advantage and had seven corner kicks to MTSU's five. "We played extremely soft through the first 45 minutes, and I give Middle Tennessee full credit," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "They came to play and deserved to be up at the break. The second half we showed some fight, but the damage had been done, and we had to settle for the draw. It was a disappointing result, but one we will hopefully grow from." Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon remains one shutout shy of the Tech all-time career record of 11. She finished the match with eight saves, one shy of her season-high.
Tech concludes the Middle Tennessee Soccer Classic Sunday morning, beginning at 11 a.m. against Alabama A&M. The Red Raiders return to the John Walker Soccer Complex next weekend as Tech hosts Arizona Fri., Sept. 12, and Northwestern State Sun., Sept. 14. |
