LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team closed out its season-long five match homestand Sunday with a sound 3-1 victory over Cal State Northridge at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Three separate Red Raiders scored in the match as Texas Tech moved to 5-1-0 on the season.
"It was a strong performance," head coach Tom Stone said. "Sunday college soccer games are not always the prettiest. Everyone is laying it on the line Friday night, you don't have near enough recovery time playing at one o'clock and neither team is going to be at their best physically. So the mental side has to take over. I thought we were certainly the mentally tougher team."
Sophomore forward Janine Beckie got the Red Raiders on the board first with an early goal coming in just the third minute of play. Beckie took a long feed from defender Hayley Haagsma across midfield and sent a shot past Cal State Northridge goalkeeper Cynthia Tafoya for her third goal of the season and 17th of her young career.
The score was the fastest start by Texas Tech this season and the earliest goal by a Red Raider in a match since Beckie scored in the opening minute of the 2012 season opener against Idaho.
"Janine is so composed on breakaways," Stone said. "It was impressive and a great start for us."
Tech scored again in the first half when Briana Rohmer connected on a header inside the penalty box to put the Red Raiders on top 2-0 in the 39th minute. The score came by way of a double assist from Haagsma and sophomore Caity Heap.
On the play, Heap sent a corner kick near the top of the box where Haagsma relayed a perfect pass to Rohmer who punched the header home from six-yards out.
The score was Rohmer's first of the season and second of her career. Meanwhile, Haagsma picked up her second assist of the afternoon pushing her total to three for the season. She entered the match already with three goals and now leads the Red Raiders with nine points on the year.
Sunday marked Haagsma's first career multi-assist game, and caps off a weekend that also featured her first career game-winning goal Friday against Cal State Fullerton.
Tech sophomore Caity Heap then connected on the third Red Raider goal of the afternoon when she found the back of the net off a well-placed pass from junior teammate Paige Strahan. The strike came in the 61st minute of play, and marked Heap's second goal of the season and Strahan's second assist of the year.
Cal State Northridge broke up the shutout opportunity minutes later when Hannah Wissler connected on a header to cut the Tech lead to 3-1 in the 64th minute. It marked just the fourth goal Tech has given up in six matches this season.
Senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson made a season-high three saves in front of the Red Raider net while picking up her fifth win of the season.
The Red Raiders hit the road next week as they travel to Arizona for the `Cats Classic featuring match ups with Arizona State (Sept. 13) and Arizona (Sept. 15).
