TUCSON, Ariz. - Texas Tech sophomore Janine Beckie scored twice Sunday as the Red Raider soccer team shutout Arizona 2-0 in the finale of the 2013 `Cats Classic at Murphey Field.
With the victory, No. 24 Texas Tech improves to 7-1-0 on the season and completed a sweep of the `Cats Classic tournament after defeating Arizona State 1-0 in overtime Friday. Texas Tech also improves to a perfect 3-0 away from home while extending its current winning streak to four matches.
"We had grueling conditions for a Sunday game in 97-degree heat after playing in overtime on Friday night," head coach Tom Stone said. "But that is college soccer and the ladies really showed great mentality to grind out a win today."
Texas Tech has now shutout three of its last four opponents while allowing just one goal during its current unbeaten stretch.
Beckie put the Red Raiders on top early in the first half scoring the opening goal just more than two minutes into the match with a long strike from left of 18-yard box. It marked her second-quickest strike of the season after scoring just 2:06 into Tech's 3-1 victory over Cal State Northridge earlier this season.
"It was the result of having such a quick release when she shoots," Stone said. "It was a bit of a shot/cross but the keeper never saw it because Janine hit it so hard."
She followed the impressive score with her second of the afternoon in the 68th minute of play after a deflection and scramble in front of the Arizona net to give the Red Raiders a 2-0 advantage.
"Beckie beat everyone to it and hammered home for the insurance goal," Stone said. "It was a great flank play and serve from Alli [Murphy]. [Caity] Heap and Janine swarmed the service and Beckie jumped on the rebound."
The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native and 2013 MAC Hermann Trophy candidate now has four career multi-goal performances and five goals through seven matches this season to lead the Red Raiders in scoring. Beckie led Tech's attack on Sunday with four shots and recorded her second game-winner of the season.
Meanwhile, the Red Raider defense turned in another strong match as Arizona held a 16-8 advantage in total shots, but only two of the Wildcats' shots were on goal.
In front of the net, senior goalkeeper Victoria Esson turned in another impressive performance making two saves on the day en route to her fifth shutout of the season and the 19th of her decorated career.
Texas Tech continues its season-long six match road trip next week when the Red Raiders travel to Albuquerque, N.M. for the Jack in the Box Classic.
