LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's soccer team lost its Big 12 opener to Texas, 3-2, in double overtime, at R.P. Fuller Stadium this evening. The Red Raiders led the Longhorns for 37 minutes of the first half.

Freshman Jenifer Thomas started the Tech scoring with her second goal on the season coming in the sixth minute of play. She scored on a break away after she received a pass from sophomore Jenna Wetzel.

Freshman Priscilla Esquivel added to Tech's total when she scored her seventh goal of the season in the 18th minute of play. Freshman Lauren Lothrop fired a shot that hit the cross bar and Esquivel gained control of the rebound and put it past Texas goalkeeper Dana Hall for the goal. Lothrop was tallied with her third assist on the season.

The Tech defense gave up two goals throughout the 90 minute regulation time. The match made it to double overtime when Carrie Schmit of Texas scored her first goal of the evening, 34 seconds into the second overtime, pushing Texas over the Red Raiders, 3-2.

Freshman Tina Rincon started in goal for the Red Raiders, playing for just over 110 minutes. Rincon racked up seven saves while defending ten shots on goal during the epic match. Her season save total is now at 17 and her record has dropped to 0-2.

Tech soccer returns to the pitch Sun., Sept 26, at 1 p.m., when the Red Raiders will battle Big 12 rival Texas A&M at R.P. Fuller Stadium. Tickets for the 2004 season are available by calling the Athletic Ticket Office at 742-TECH (8324) or (888) GO-BIG-12.
