Tech Loses to Texas A&M

LUBBOCK, Texas -- The Texas Tech women's soccer team was defeated 4-2 by the number three ranked Texas A&M Aggies today at R.P. Fuller Stadium.

The Red Raiders scored first, as sophomore forward Kristy Frantz nailed a penalty kick in the fourth minute of play. The Aggies answered that with a goal from junior forward Sharon Pickering in the eighth minute of play. Freshman midfielder Alison Peters was credited with the assist. Ten minutes later, freshman forward Lindsey Thompson scored the Red Raiders' second goal of the game. Texas A&M once again answered with a score from Peters in the 36th minute.

"I think the first goal was a gift from the referee. The second goal was a great goal by Lindsey Thompson," Texas Tech Head Coach Felix Oskam said.

Two minutes into the second half, Sonia Ibanez and Pickering teamed up to assist Peters on her second goal of the game. Senior forward Bryn Blalack scored the fourth goal for A&M in the 78th minute.

"It was the best effort in intensity that I have seen this team play. I want them to play with emotion and play smart. They played with emotion and I was happy about that. I wanted to see if they could rise to the occasion against a very good A&M team, and they did that today, " Oskam said.

Texas Tech took 11 shots on goal, two corner kicks and committed four fouls. Freshman goalkeeper Kellie McCallister had seven saves.

Texas A&M took 25 shots on goal, 18 corner kicks and committed 15 fouls. Sophomore goalkeeper Melanie Wilson had four saves.

The Red Raiders fell to 5-9 on the season and 4-5 in Big 12 play. The Aggies moved to 12-1 on the season and kept their conference mark unblemished at 8-0.

Tech will have a week off before traveling to Colorado to take on Colorado College on Oct. 17 at 4 p.m. the Red Raiders will wrap up Big 12 play with a game against Colorado on Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. in Boulder.
