Red Raider Soccer Gets Three Commitments for the 2003 Season
Feb. 6, 2003 LUBBOCK, Texas - Women's Soccer Head Coach Felix Oskam announced today the program had received commitments from three student-athletes planning to join the Red Raiders when they kick off the 2003 season this fall. Jenna Wetzel a native of Fort Collins, Colo., was MVP of the University of Colorado soccer camp in 2001, Offensive MVP of her high school team in 2001, and her club team, Arsenal Gold, 2000-2002. A three-time Academic All-State award winner, Wetzel was also selected as 2nd team All-Conference in both 2001 and 2002. "Jenna is the type of player who is very versatile and can play either mid fielder or forward for us," said Oskam. "She is a very technically clean player that will come into camp very fit and make a difference for us." Meghan Blume, a 5-foot-5 defender from Sammamish, Wash., comes to Tech after being a member of the Washington state team from 2000-2002 and regional pool in 2000. She was a three-year starter and also served as captain for Eastlake High School and helped to lead her club team, FC Royals U17, to the Washington State Cup Championship and Rainier Challenge Championship in 2001 and 2002. "Meghan is the type of defender who can play inside or outside defense and that is a big plus for us," Oskam noted. "She played a zonal defense in high school which is similar to the one we play, so I think that should ease her adjustment to our system." The third player signed by the Red Raiders is Jennifer Vasquez of San Antonio, Texas. A 5' 3" forward, Vasquez was a four-year starter at William Howard Taft High School, where she garnered 1st team All District in 2001 and 2nd team All-District in 2000, and a member of the 86 Classics Club team. In high school, she was active in the Spanish Club and Spanish National Honor Society. "Jennifer is a forward with speed, and that is something that we need," Oskam commented. "She is the type of player that could be a real sleeper recruit coming out of high school." "This is a very good class for us, all three girls have a chance to come in and see a lot of playing time right from the beginning," said Oskam of the three girls. "These three are great kids and we expect them to come in and have an immediate impact."
The Red Raiders will host a special exhibition game this spring as they host the New Zealand National team on Fri., March 28, at 7 p.m. at R. P. Fuller Stadium.
