LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team, coming off its best season in school history with 18 victories and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, opened its 2014 spring season Sunday with a home exhibition match against Abilene Christian.

The Red Raiders took an early 1-0 lead following a Caity Heap blast into the top corner of the Wildcat net, but Abilene Christian netted an equalizer in the 50th minute of play to force an eventual 1-1 draw.

"First of all we were all impressed with the level of play from our newest Division I friends from Abilene Christian," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "They are well coached and very well organized. Their goal was well taken after a turnover near the top of our box. Abilene Christian's goalkeeper also made some very solid saves."

Heap, who logged over 1,100 minutes and scored four goals as a sophomore during the 2013 season, gave the Red Raiders the 1-0 advantage in the 30th minute of play off a pass from teammate Alli Murphy.

Heap took the feed and beat a Wildcat defender with a sidestep to set up and connect on the scoring opportunity.

"There were some real good pieces of the game," Stone said. "And a few outstanding performances. But overall it's clear we have a lot of work to do this spring."

The Red Raiders held a 19-4 advantage in shots and 6-2 advantage in corner kick opportunities in the match.

Texas Tech played the match without the services of All-Americans Janine Beckie and Jaelene Hinkle who were unavailable due to National Youth Team commitments out of the country.

Tech will continue its spring schedule Friday with a home match against West Texas A&M at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
