LUBBOCK, Texas - This night meant something to Dawn Ward.
This night was a chance for Ward, along with her teammates, to connect with those who make their careers at Texas Tech possible - both athletically and academically.
The Texas Tech soccer team spent Tuesday night personally calling Red Raider Scholarship Fund donors and thanking them for the opportunities they have been given as student-athletes at Texas Tech.
"It means so much to me," Ward said. "I am fortunate enough to be a scholarship player. I know that I appreciate it personally, as do my parents. It's a great honor."
The Red Raider Club is the principal fundraising arm of Texas Tech athletics supported solely by private donations. The fundraising efforts of the Red Raider Club support student-athlete scholarships as well as funding for facilities for each of the 17 athletic programs at Texas Tech.
"It's a great way for our athletes to pay tribute to those who give so generously to the Red Raider Club Scholarship Fund," associate head coach Aaron Gordon said.
Tuesday's event was one of four `Thank-A-Thons' spread throughout the spring semester, and the only sport-specific.
The opportunity to personally thank donors of the Red Raider Club was something that members of the soccer program found to be a unique and special experience.
"We're just so thankful to all these people that are generous enough to want to donate their money to such a wonderful university," junior Sarah Ellison said. "We couldn't do what we do without them in the classroom and on the field."
