TTU's Pitts Leads Club Team To National Soccer Championship
July 31, 2006
DES MOINES, Iowa - Texas Tech's Colleen Pitts is a member of the 2006 U18 US Youth Soccer national championship team, the Dallas Texans Red '88. An incoming freshman goalkeeper at Texas Tech, Pitts received the adidas Golden Glove award for her efforts at the national tournament. The victory declared the Texans as the 2006 "Frank" Kelly Cup winners.
The Dallas Texans Red '88 entered the tournament as the Region III champions and played from behind for much of the five days of play. The Texans brought a 1-1-1 record into the championship round on Sunday morning, while their opponents, the PDA Wildcats of New Jersey, entered the game undefeated, having allowed just one goal in the previous three games. The PDA Wildcats scored first and early, although Pitts earned her stripes by shutting down the opponent for the rest of the game. Her teammates knocked in three unanswered goals on their way to a 3-1 win and a national title.
Earlier in the tournament, the Texans came back from a 3-1 deficit against back-to-back champions Eclipse Select, scoring the tying goal in the 89th minute. They also came from behind to defeat the San Diego Surf 3-1 in their final round robin match.
Pitts was announced as the adidas Golden Glove winner at the conclusion of the tournament. Each year one player from each age division, determined to have had the greatest competitive impact in the US Youth Soccer Championships, is awarded the Adidas Golden Glove and Golden Boot awards.
In other Red Raider news, Shannon Sims and Tina Rincon were members of the Sting Royal '89 club team, who finished tied for third in the U19 division of the US Youth Soccer Championships. Sims and Rincon will return to the Texas Tech squad as sophomores.
