The Red Raiders reported for the 2011 training camp.
LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2011 Texas Tech soccer season is underway as 26 student-athletes reported for training camp on Tuesday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Red Raider head coach Tom Stone returns 14 letterwinners, including 10 starters, from a team that saw its most successful season in 14 years as it went 11-8-1 and returned to the Big 12 Championship for the fourth-consecutive year in 2010. The Red Raiders welcome back Conner Williams, who missed the entire 2010 season after sustaining a knee injury during summer club play. Williams started all 20 matches in midfield as a freshman in 2009. One player who will not see any action this year is junior goalkeeper Erin Wikelius, who will miss the season due to a back injury.
This year's roster consists of four seniors - Taylor Lytle, Casey McCall, Madison Terry and Maggie Fete, and six juniors - Sarah Ellison, Dawn Ward, Tiffini Smith, Morgan Johnson, Haley Fowler and transfer goalkeeper Victoria Esson. Esson, Tech's first international player, hails from Christchurch, New Zealand and has played on both the U17 and U20 National Teams for her country. Along with Williams, six other sophomores grace this year's roster, including the return of Hayley Haagsma, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the eight game of the season in 2010. Rounding out the sophomore class is Jessica Fuston, the 2010 Big 12 Rookie of the Year, Jessica Disabella, Mallory Yacullo, Lea Christensen and transfer Alexis Braziel.
The Red Raiders also welcome seven new freshmen, while redshirt freshman Gabby Kaufman will suit up this year after redshirting last season. The seven newcomers include: Jaelene Hinkle, who has U17 and U18 National Team experience, Erin Inman, Cheyenne Diggs, Jackie Strug, Bridgett Jenkins, Taylor Narvaiz and Paige Strahan.
Tech will play its lone exhibition match on Sat., Aug. 13, at New Mexico and will open the 2011 season on Fri., Aug. 19 as it hosts Rice at 7 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The Red Raiders also host New Mexico State on Sun., Aug. 21, at 7 p.m.
