LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2009 Texas Tech Soccer season officially began Tuesday evening as all 29 Red Raiders reported for meetings held at the John Walker Soccer Complex's new state-of-the-art soccer house.

The Red Raiders begin two-a-day practices on Wednesday that will run primarily until the team's first preseason exhibition match against West Texas A&M on Aug. 14 at the John Walker Soccer Complex. All practices are open to both the public and media. The team will hold its only preseason intrasquad scrimmage Sun., Aug. 9.

In his third season at the helm of the Tech Soccer program, Tom Stone returns his largest group of upperclassmen during his tenure as six seniors return for their final year. Stone will not have fellow senior Sarabeth Clopton, however, as she will remain with the team throughout the season, but will be unable to participate in any matches due to multiple knee injuries. Clopton had started in 37-consecutive matches leading into the season.

Stone will get the addition of his first full recruiting class as nine freshmen arrive on campus for their first season. The class represents Stone's first to be recruited for a full year since his hire in May 2007.

"We're obviously excited about this upcoming season," Stone said. "I think we have a good mixture of upperclassmen who have experience in the Big 12 and freshmen that we will be able to compete every match. I think this group has the talent to be successful, but we also have to put in quality work in the preseason to get ready for the challenge ahead."

The Red Raiders kickoff the regular season Aug. 21 at home against Texas-San Antonio. Tech will host eight home matches at the John Walker Soccer Complex this season, including the Red Raider Classic, Sept. 18-20.
