Red Raiders Report For 2014 Soccer Season

Aug. 5, 2014

LUBBOCK, Texas - The 2014 Texas Tech soccer season officially began Tuesday evening as 30 Red Raiders reported for a team meeting at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

The Red Raiders, who return 20 letterwinners and seven starters from last season's 18-2-3 club, met with various members of the athletics department before departing for the first team meal of the season.

"It's always nice to have that first meeting of the season," eighth-year Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Most of our team has been here for the past month but that first meeting always sets the tone and prepares you for the season. We're excited to get started tomorrow."

Tech will open preseason practice with its first two-a-day workout Wednesday morning. The Red Raiders will go through a morning session each day this week before returning for an evening practice.

The Red Raiders will be missing one familiar face for at least the first week of training camp as junior Janine Beckie is currently playing on the Canada U-20 National Team in the FIFA World Cup.

The Canadians, the hosts of the U-20 World Cup, fell to Ghana, 1-0, in the opening match of Pool A this evening in Toronto. Beckie and her Team Canada teammates will look to rebound Friday evening against Finland in the second match of pool play.

Tech, meanwhile, has just under three weeks before kicking off its season Aug. 22 at home against New Mexico. The Red Raiders will receive one preseason test prior to then by traveling to Denver for an Aug. 16 exhibition match.
