LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomore forward Janine Beckie was tabbed as the Big 12 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year by College Sports Madness Wednesday morning. The talented and dynamic forward highlighted a list of four Red Raiders who earned preseason honors by the national website.
Junior defender Jaelene Hinkle was also named to the first team while junior midfielder Paige Strahan and senior defender Hayley Haagsma were tabbed to the second team. Beckie and Strahan combined for 22 goals and 10 game-winners in 2012 as the top scoring duo in the Big 12. Beckie netted 14 while Strahan added eight on the year.
Meanwhile, Hinkle and Haagsma return as two of the top defenders in the Big 12, Hinkle as one of the speediest backs in the country who also led the squad in assists last year with five.
College Sports Madness tabbed the Red Raiders at No. 22 in its national preseason rankings earlier this week.
Texas Tech opens the 2013 season Aug. 23 at New Mexico and hosts its home opener Aug. 25 against Colorado State at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
