DENVER, Colo. - The Red Raiders picked a 1-0 shutout win over Utah Saturday night in their lone preseason exhibition match at the University of Denver. Tech junior midfielder Hayley Haagsma found the back of the net for the game-winning goal in the 79th minute of the match to push Tech past Utah.

"There was a lot of end-to-end action," Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "It had the feel of a regular season match which is exactly what we had hoped for in this match up. Utah stretched us and definitely helped us identify our training needs over the next few weeks."

Freshman forward, and Highlands Ranch, Colo., native Janine Beckie picked up the assist.

"She beat her player and attempted to slot the keeper," Stone said. "But had her shot rebound out to the edge of the box where Haagsma blasted a first time volley through the crowd and into the net."

The Red Raiders outshot Utah 13-8 in the match and 8-2 in the second half while junior Victoria Esson made two saves in the first half.

Texas Tech will return home for its regular-season opener Aug. 17 when the Red Raiders host Idaho at the John Walker Soccer Complex. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
