Head Coach Tom Stone
Overall thoughts for the night...
"I can't get past the opening night jitters. They were almost severe at times because we played so many players on our roster that have never played college soccer before. We flexed the muscle of our roster well and it paid off for us. We came out in the opening minute like we were shot out of a cannon and scored a great goal. They had a good game plan and they took away what we liked to do which is our short passing game and they turned us into more of a vertical team. Thankfully for us, we got behind them enough times and caused problems. The moment I'm most excited was the moment they tied it. When they tied it with only eight minutes left, it could've easily finished in over time or a tie. Within four minutes, our team took a stand. I thought this was a really awesome sign for this team. To be frustrated because they knew they should be winning the game and when the other team equalized, they turned up the volume and took care of business."
On what the team take away from this win going into New Mexico on Sunday
"I think defensively we have some work to do. I think we let them a little bit in too many times. One thing we'll take away is the character on this team. Cruising and gaining control. The game got away from us and we got it back. What I liked is we took the game back and made it ours. The girls had the mentality that they couldn't lose the season opener at home all night long and that's why we won."
Paige Strahan (MF)
On what she was thinking when they scored that equalizer
"It was a shock almost. I felt like we controlled the game the entire time. We're very competitive. I knew the energy would rise and we could make something out of it."
On the team did to break through in the second half?
"The best thing we have on this team is that nobody wants to lose. We had a high energy level but everybody is great at staying composed. The energy and the composure helped us get back in it."
Fr. Janine Beckie (F)
On what happened in that first minute?
"Coach Stone told us to come out really hard, like we got shot out of a cannon, which is exactly what we did. What an amazing ball by Conner Williams up the right side. First I didn't think I was going to get there so I slid in and luckily it went in. I was real excited. It was a good way to start."
