LUBBOCK, Texas - Fresh off of their fourth consecutive season-opening victory, the Red Raiders will return to the John Walker Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon for a showdown with regional rival New Mexico.
"This is a game that both us and New Mexico have wanted for about four years but we just couldn't get the schedules right," head coach Tom Stone said. "Now we have it, and they are a very good team. They are one of the best teams on our schedule and are in the NCAA Tournament almost every year. This is just a great match to have at home."
First kick for Sunday's match is scheduled for noon as the Red Raiders will look to move to a perfect 2-0 after the first weekend of action in the 2012 season.
Texas Tech (1-0-0) will ride the momentum of an impressive showing in a 2-1 victory over Idaho Friday in which they outshot the Vandals 22-7. Sophomore Paige Strahan provided the game-winner for the Red Raiders with a long-distance strike in the 82nd minute of action.
Her goal came just four minutes after Idaho provided the equalizer to tie the game with less than 12 minutes remaining in the second half.
New Mexico (0-0-1) enters Sunday's match after ending in a draw with TCU in Albuquerque on Friday.
