Texas Tech Soccer Defeats West Texas A&M in Scrimmage
Aug. 21, 2007
LUBBOCK, Texas - Following a week of practices, the Texas Tech soccer team opened the 2007 season with a 2-1 win over West Texas A&M in a scrimmage at R.P. Fuller Stadium.
Eight minutes later Emmie Bennett split through the defense to put the Red Raiders ahead for good.
"I think the game served two main purposes," first-year Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "It gave the coaches an ability to assess the squad for the first time. The second purpose was to assess the team playing in two different systems and give ourselves a glimpse of what to expect opening weekend. Our bright spot was coming back after being down early. If we had a down side, it was that (this match) showed us how much work we have left to get ready for the season."
Tech out-shot West Texas, 14-4, while also out-numbering the Buffalos in corner kicks, 9-1.
The Red Raiders begin the 2007 regular season with three straight road matches at Georgia, Vanderbilt and Texas State, before their home opener with Stephen F. Austin Sept. 7.
All home games will be played at R.P. Fuller Stadium this season.
