Sept. 3, 1999

LUBBOCK, Texas - A header by junior midfielder Lindsay Thompson in the overtime period gave the Texas Tech women’s soccer team its first victory of the 1999 season with a 3-2 win over West Texas A&M. The Red Raiders move to 1-2 on the year.

The Lady Buffs scored the first goal of the game at the nine-minute mark on an unassisted goal by Alina Apodaca before the Red Raiders knotted the score at 59:01 by junior midfielder Jennifer Hamm. WTAMU came back to take the lead at 2-1 on a goal by Courtney Massie at 78:10 on an assist by Suzanne Robison. Tech’s senior forward Kristy Frantz knocked in a goal at the 80:56 mark to tie the contest at 2-2 to send the game into overtime. Thompson’s goal came at 103:58 on an assist from freshman midfielder Lindsey Wile to clinch the victory.

“A win is a win,” said assistant coach Barb Chura. “We didn’t play particularly well, but we got a win and that is the most important thing. They (WTAMU) came at us and played a great game. They put us in a come-from-behind position a couple of times. “

Tech outshot the Lady Buffs 27-6, with Frantz having a team-high six shots-on-goal. WTAMU had four players with one shot-on-goal each.

Next up for the Red Raiders is a home contest with Arkansas on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 1 p.m. at R.P. Fuller Stadium.

“We play a tough Arkansas team on Sunday,” said Chura. “If we come out and play like we are capable of, then we will be okay.”
