Red Raiders improve to 2-3-1 after tournament
Texas Tech won its first game at the Reebok Miner Desert Scramble in El Paso, Texas with 1-0 shutout over UTEP last Friday at Charlie Davis Park.

After a scoreless first half, the Red Raiders' sophomore forward Carrie Graham worked a give-and-go with teammate senior forward Kristy Frantz that gave Graham an open shot from seven yards out at 51:14. Graham converted on the opportunity for the only score of the day. Tech outshot the Miners 13-4, and had seven corner kicks to UTEP's three. Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese tallied two saves. Junior midfielder Jennifer Hamm had a game-high four shots.

On Sunday, the Red Raiders tied, 1-1, with New Mexico. Graham once again scored Tech's only goal at 71:39 on a cross header with an assist from Frantz. The Lobos knotted the scored at 86:22. After two overtime periods, the game finished as a tie, the first for both teams this year. The Red Raiders outshot New Mexico 18-8, while the Lobos had eight corner kicks to Tech's five. Peese played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves. Hamm also had a game-high six shots.

This Week's Action
Texas Tech will host the Four Points Sheraton Shoot-out this weekend at R. P. Fuller Stadium. On Friday (Sept. 17) North Texas will take on Syracuse at 4 p.m. before the Red Raiders play North Texas on Saturday (Sept. 18) at 1 p.m. and Syracuse on Sunday (Sept. 19) at 1 p.m.

North Texas holds a 3-1 record after beating Oklahoma State, 4-2, last weekend in Stillwater, Okla. In that game, sophomore defender Gina Turner scored the first goal followed by senior midfielder Krista Davey, sophomore midfielder Carrie Kveton and the last goal by junior forward Kim Brunette. UNT outshot OSU 16-11 and had four corner kicks to OSU's seven. On the year, Kveton and Davey lead the Lady Eagles with three goals apiece. Sophomores Lindsay Deal and Adria Costanzo have split time at the goalkeeper position.

Syracuse has 1-3-1 mark, winning its first game of the season against Colgate 3-0 last week. Syracuse will host Dartmouth on Tuesday, Sept. 14 before heading to Lubbock. Against Colgate, sophomore forward/midfielder Candy Reich got Syracuse on the board early by scoring a goal in just over one minute of play. Goals were also scored by senior defender Jaime Mingoia and senior midfielder Jenna Szyluk. On the year, four players have score one goal each. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Karlander has started three of the four games for the Orangewomen.

Series Records
The Red Raiders hold a 2-1-1 advantage over North Texas, with the Lady Eagles winning the last game, 2-0, on Oct. 31, 1996. The last time Tech was victorious was Sept. 2, 1995 in a 3-2 triumph. Sunday will mark the first time Tech has squared off against Syracuse.

Graham Gets Her First
Sophomore forward Carrie Graham scored her first goal as a Red Raider in the win over UTEP Sept. 10 and then in the next game against New Mexico Sept. 12, she got her second goal. The Dallas, Texas native, transferred to Tech after a year at Alabama-Birmingham. While at UAB, Graham started all 18 games as a freshman and finished the year second on the team in goals (5) and third in points (13). She was also named to Conference USA's All-Freshman team and received the team's Coaches Award.

Shutout #1
Sophomore goalkeeper Brittany Peese recorded her first save of year and her fifth of her career. Peese has played 493:58 minutes with a 1.09 goal-against-average.

Frantz Hits 100
Senior forward Kristy Frantz got her 100th-career point when she scored a goal against West Texas A&M on Sept. 3. Frantz is Tech's all-time leader in career points 102.

Head Coach Felix Oskam
Felix Oskam begins his third season as head coach of the Red Raiders and has compiled a 14-18-3 record in the last two seasons. Previously, Oskam had served as an assistant coach for the team during the 1995 and 1996 seasons.

Prior to coming to Tech in 1995, Oskam served for three years as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs at the University of Tulsa. During the 1993 season, the Tulsa women's program finished ranked 18th in the nation. In 1991, the Tulsa men's team achieved a national ranking of 17. Oskam is currently a staff coach and instructor fro the North Texas Soccer Association and a Region III Olympic Development Program (ODP). He also worked as a staff coach for the ODP in Oklahoma and coached the Blackwatch Ô80 girls team select team in Tulsa.

Oskam played 12 years of club soccer in the Netherlands before attending the University of North Texas. While at North Texas, he helped guide the Eagles to their first national ranking and was twice chosen as a Texas Collegiate Soccer League All-Star. Oskam holds a United States Soccer Federation 'A' license and is a member of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Four Points Shootout
The Red Raiders will host the Four Points Sheraton Shoot-Out Sept. 17-19. North Texas will play Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 17 at 4 p.m., while Tech will play North Texas on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 1 p.m. and Syracuse the following Sunday at 1 p.m.
