DALLAS -- Texas Tech women's soccer midfielder Jennifer Hamm was named to the Big 12 All-Conference second team voted on by the league's head coaches and announced today by the league office.

Sharolta Nonen, a senior defender from Nebraska, was selected as the 1999 Big 12 Player of the Year. A native of Vancouver, British Columbia, Nonen has been one of the most dominant defenders in the nation. Defensively, Nebraska has recorded 10 shutouts this season and ranks third in the country in team defense with a 0.51 goals against average.

Rookie of the Year honors go to Iowa State midfielder Katie Antongiovanni. For her efforts, Antongiovanni was also named to the All-Big 12 second team. The freshman from Bakersfield, Calif., becomes the second Cyclone to be honored as rookie of the year. Last season, teammate Erica Florez was honored.

John Walker, head coach at the University of Nebraska, is the 1999 Coach of the Year. This marks the second time that Walker has been honored by his peers. He was name coach of the year in 1996, the league's inaugural season. Walker has led his team to a No. 4 ranking in every major poll this season. Under his direction, the Huskers have compiled an impressive 99-22-2 overall record in five plus seasons.

The fourth annual Big 12 Women's Soccer Tournament kicks off Wednesday, Nov. 3 as Nebraska, the tournament's top seed, faces eighth-seed Texas Tech at 11 a.m. (CST). Fourth-seed Baylor squares off against No. 5 Texas in the second game on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. In the evening games, second-seed Texas A&M squares off against No. 7 Iowa State at 5 p.m. followed by No. 3 Missouri against No. 6 Colorado at 7:30 p.m. The 1999 tournament marks the first year that eight teams will participate. For the past three years, a six-team field has been utilized for the tournament.

Fox Sports Net will broadcast the title game on a tape-delayed basis. Tournament action will be held at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
