LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech freshman forward Janine Beckie officially became the program's first All-American Friday as the National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced its official postseason team.
"This is an exciting honor for such a young player like Janine." Texas Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Janine's preparation for her first college season was excellent and her youth national team experience over the summer accelerated her development. In the college environment, Janine's personal commitment to training and being ready to play every day was exemplary . Beyond her soccer, Janine's humility and team-first attitude is what really makes her the special person and player that she is."
One of two freshmen on the three All-America squads, Beckie was tabbed to the second team after leading the Red Raiders with 14 goals and five assists during her sensational 2012 campaign.
"It is an unbelievable honor to be recognized amongst such an impressive group of players," Beckie said. "The amount of support I have had this season helped me to get where I am. I have incredible teammates and an amazing coaching staff - they are truly fearless champions. I am blessed to be given this honor and to represent my school, team and family."
The Highlands Ranch, Colo., native and Big 12 Rookie of the Year selection matched the school record with five game-winning goals on the year while her 14 scores were the most by a Red Raider since the 1996 season. On Wednesday, Beckie was named to the Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Team of the Year as a first team selection.
Beckie recorded three multi-goal performances including the Red Raiders' NCAA Second Round match against Florida State where she scored twice. Her goal against Kansas on Nov. 1 led to Tech's first-ever victory at the Big 12 Tournament as the Red Raiders advanced to the semifinal match.
Beckie was twice a Big 12 Player of the Week honoree and scored two game-winners in the final minute of play this season. Meanwhile she was honored as the Disney Soccer/NSCAA National Player of the Week after scoring twice to defeat Oklahoma State in the regular season finale at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
