Red Raider Soccer Opens Big 12 Play in Oklahoma
LUBBOCK, Texas --The Texas Tech women's soccer team opens Big 12 play this weekend as they travel to Oklahoma to face the University of Oklahoma on Friday at 4 p.m. and Oklahoma State University at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
"The goal we have set for ourselves is to win the Big 12 Conference and this coming weekend is the first step toward that goal," Texas Tech Head Coach Felix Oskam said.
First up for Tech will be the Oklahoma Sooners. Last season OU went 1-13 and did not participate in Big 12 competition. Against Big 12 teams, Oklahoma recorded a 0-4 mark. Senior defender Sheri Whaley and sophomore defender Natalie Hixson are the team's top returnees. Kathleen Peay, a midfielder from Richardson and Heather Morrison, a midfielder from Plano are two of the Sooners' top newcomers. Oklahoma is currently 0-1 on the season and in Big 12 play after losing 2-1 to nationally ranked Texas A&M. The meeting between Tech and Oklahoma will mark the first in school history.
Oklahoma State holds a 1-0 mark this season, after defeating Northwestern State 13-0. Freshman Carrie Jones recorded a hat trick in the lopsided victory, as she netted two goals in the first half and a third in the final period.
Texas Tech holds a 1-0 series record over the Cowgirls. In their last meeting on Sept. 15, 1996, the Red Raiders shutout OSU 3-0.
The Red Raiders enter Big 12 play with a season record of 0-2.
