Softball Team Heads South For Weekend
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech softball team will travel to San Marcos and Denton this weekend for their second road trip of the season.
On Saturday, Feb. 8, Tech will play a doubleheader against Southwest Texas State beginning at noon. It will be the first game of the season for the Bobcats who return seven letterwinners and seven starters from a squad that went 18-40 last season. Southwest Texas is led by Second team All-Conference members Kelly Jensen (Sr, Pitcher) and Laura Rodriguez (Sr., Outfielder/Catcher). Last season, the Red Raiders split a doubleheader with the Bobcats. Tech claimed their first win of the season 5-3 in 15 innings, before losing the second game 4-5.
Tech will then travel to Denton to take on the first year softball program at Texas Women's University. The Pioneers won the 1979 AIAW/ASA Women's College World Series, but the program was discontinued after the 1981 season. The TWU squad is composed of transfers, freshmen and a few athletes who sat out last season. The team's lone senior is left fielder Karen Butterworth of Crosby.
"We are looking forward to this road trip. Last weekend we learned a lot about our program. Some things worked really well for us, but their are also some areas that we need to improve on. That's what these games are all about. They are a tune up for conference play. They show us what we are and where we need to go.," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
The Red Raiders are 2-2 on the season. Last weekend they took two games from Stephen F. Austin before losing two to Sam Houston State University.
