Tech Softball Team Heads to Oklahoma for the Weekend
The Red Raider softball team will travel to Stillwater, Okla., then to Norman, Okla. to face Oklahoma State and Oklahoma in a Big 12 weekend series.
On Saturday, Tech will face Oklahoma State in a doubleheader beginning at noon. The Cowgirls, who are 24-11 on the season, will open Big 12 play against Tech. OSU is currently ranked 17th nationally and third in the Midwest Region. The last series between the two teams saw the Cowgirls take three from Tech in Lubbock.
The road trip doesn't get any easier as Tech heads to Norman on Sunday to face Oklahoma in the Sooners Big 12 opener. Oklahoma is ranked seventh nationally and first in the Midwest Region. They have a season mark of 35-11. Last season, Oklahoma swept the final three games of the regular-season from Tech.
"This will be a big road trip for us. We are going to have to play really well. Both Oklahoma State and Oklahoma have quality ball clubs. If we play like we are capable of playing then good things will happen for us," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
In the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 Poll released on Wednesday, the Big 12 Conference had four teams ranked in the top 25 nationally and one other team receiving votes. Oklahoma leads the rankings, while Missouri came in 12th, followed by Oklahoma State and Kansas at 25th. Baylor dropped out of the poll this week, but is still receiving votes.
Polling for the Midwest Region has six Big 12 teams in the top seven. Oklahoma is in the number one spot, followed by Missouri, Oklahoma State and Kansas. Baylor and Nebraska are sixth and seventh. The only ranked team not in the Big 12 Conference is Southern Illinois at number five.
"It is great for the conference to have so many teams ranked in the Top 25. That shows how tough this conference is and how much we have to work to establish ourselves in the Big 12 and nationally," Leurs-Gillispie said.
