Tech Faces Baylor in Opening Round of Big 12 Tournament
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Red Raider softball team will play Baylor in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Tech enters the tournament as the ninth seed with a 1-13 conference mark. They will face eighth seed Baylor at 10 a.m. on Friday in the first game of the tournament.
"We are really looking forward to this weekend. There is always a lot of excitement surrounding the tournament and I think that will help our team get ready to play," head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
The Big 12 series between Tech and Baylor had the Bears winning two games, 0-1, 0-3, in Waco. Emily Hayes took the loss in the first game. She had six hits and four strikeouts in six innings of work. Kim Martinez improved her series batting average to .500 in the second game when she went three of three from the plate.
"The series against Baylor earlier this season was a good one. Both teams played hard, but we just came up short. We are excited about getting another shot at them. Our teams are very similar, so it should be a great game," Luers-Gillispie said.
Should Tech win the first game, they will play the number one seed Missouri on Friday at noon in game three. Earlier this season, the Tigers swept Tech at home, 10-0, 10-4. Lora DeLashmutt had three hits in five at bats, including a home run in the second game.
Prior to the beginning of the tournament, a banquet will be held to name the Big 12 All-Conference team, Player of the Year, Newcomer of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. All-America candidate Kim Martinez has been nominated for the All-Conference team and Newcomer of the Year.
