New Mexico State Takes Red Raider Tournament Title

LUBBOCK, Texas - The New Mexico State Roadrunners defeated Purdue 10-5 to win the second annual Red Raider Invitational tournament. Eastern Arizona defeated Schreiner to win the title for Pools A and B.

The Roadrunners scored four runs in the first inning, while Purdue knocked in two in the bottom of the second. The Roadrunners answered with two runs in the fifth and four in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead. Purdue added one run in the sixth and two in the seventh. But it wasn't enough as New Mexico State took home the 10-5 win.

In the championship game for Pools A and B, Eastern Arizona and Schreiner battled in a game marked by tough defense. Eastern Arizona scored a run in the second and another in the bottom of the sixth. Autumn Anderson of Eastern had three strikeouts in the game, while Schreiner's Jen Von Gonten had four.

In other action, two-time defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma City University defeated the Red Raiders 4-1 for the Consolation Championship. Vernon Junior College won the consolation bracket for Pools A and B by defeating Pratt 9-1.

"I think overall it was a great tournament. The quality of teams in our Pool and the other two Pools was tremendous. Of course we wish we had played better, but we learned a lot about what we need to fix before we play again," Texas Tech head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie said.
