Albuquerque, N.M. -

Texas Tech Red Raider Fastpitch began its 1999 campaign with a doubleheader against the University of New Mexico Lobos. Tech took game-one by a score of 1-0 and fell in game-two by a score of 4-2.

In the first game, the Red Raiders struck early in the first-inning as senior Kim Martinez scored off a Shauna Briggs single. Junior catcher Shauna Briggs led the Tech offensive effort with 3 hits and 1 RBI on 3 at-bats. The Red Raider defense held New Mexico to its first scoreless game of the season.

In game-two of the doubleheader, the Lobos came out firing as they scored two runs in both the 2nd and 3rd innings to put the score at 4-0. However, the Raiders made a comeback in the bottom of the 5th as Aimee Weathers scored off a Lauren Warner double. Tech would get another run in the 6th to bring the final score to 4-2. Junior Lauren Warner led all batters with 2 hits on 3 at-bats. Tamara Harrington (1B) finished the game with 10 putouts.

"I was pleased with our overall performance and I thought we performed well for our first outing," said head coach Renee Luers-Gillespie. "Defensively, we are very strong and seemed very focused offensively but werent able to put bunts down. We should see where we stand tomorrow morning."

Texas Tech completes its three-game series against New Mexico on Sunday with a 10 a.m. matchup.
