Feb. 13, 2005
LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Senior Kelly Rhyne went 3 for 3 with 3 RBI to help led the Red Raiders to a 5-4 win over Louisville this afternoon in the last day of the Louisville Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Tech took an early lead as the Red Raiders posted three runs in the first inning. Freshmen Devin Zaragoza and Jennifer Corkin set the stage for Rhyne as she smashed a double to right field allowing Zaragoza and Corkin to score. Rhyne was then able to score when Louisville over-threw the first baseman.
Another score was made in the second inning as sophomore Natalie Kula was able to sneak in off of an error by the pitcher during Zaragoza's at bat. Zaragoza made her way around the bases to score when Rhyne hit a single down the right field line.
The Red Raiders were able to hold off Louisville as they scored four runs and had only five hits.
"Louisville has beaten very good teams this year," said head coach Teresa Wilson. "I'm thrilled that the team came out and scored early. I was happy about the pressure that we put on Louisville's defense every inning and pleased that we held out for the win."
The Red Raiders were scheduled to play another game this afternoon, but due to time constraints, the game was canceled.
