SAN MARCOS, Texas - Cara Custer gave up just four hits and struck out eight in a complete-game victory Friday as Texas Tech topped Texas State, 6-1, in the Texas Shootout opener at Bobcat Stadium.
It was the best outing of the season so far for Custer (2-1), who finished with a season high in strikeouts while also allowing her fewest amount of hits in a start this year. She retired the last seven hitters in order for Tech's fifth-straight victory.
Custer received support early as Samantha Camello connected on her first of three hits in the game, driving a RBI single to center that scored Taylor Powell from second. Camello finished 3-for-4 at the plate and scored one run off a Texas State (2-10) fourth-inning throwing error.
The Red Raiders (8-3) carried a 3-1 lead into the seventh and quickly broke the game open, beginning with an Adriana Perez leadoff home run to left field that was her Big 12-leading eighth already this season. It was the seventh-straight game where Perez had at least one RBI.
Texas State starter Ashley Wright (2-4) took the loss as she gave up two runs off three hits before being relieved by Ryan House with no outs in the third. House surrendered four runs of her own, three of which were earned, off six hits over the final five innings.
The Bobcats scored their only run in the third off a Tech throwing error to first that allowed Jordan Masek to come around all the way from second.
The Red Raiders continue the Texas Shootout with the second game of a doubleheader against North Texas. That game is currently in progress at Bobcat Stadium.
