Feb. 24, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech fastpitch softball team defeated Abilene Christian University 6-0 and 8-2 in a doubleheader today. The Red Raiders moved to 12-4 on the season while the Wildcats dropped to 3-5.
In game one, the Red Raiders got things started when Jessica Karenke and Tamara Harrington scored on a Paula Workman single in the second inning. Then Workman scored on a single by Jenny Kohler, followed by a run scored when Stephanie Walls stole home. The scoring continued in the bottom of the fourth when Kohler scored on a single by Harrington. Karenke later singled to score Harrington. Freshman Amanda Renfro picked up the win for the Red Raiders while holding the Wildcats scoreless.
In the second game the Red Raiders consistent offensive effort was the key. The squad scored at least one run in every inning except the fourth recording eight runs on ten hits. The Wildcats attempted a comeback scoring one run in both the fifth and sixth inning, but it was not enough as the Red Raiders held on to win the game 8-2.
"I couldn't be more proud of our girls," said head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. "They played up today, and it was important for us to pick up these wins before we go on the road this weekend."
Texas Tech will return to action this weekend in Tuscaloosa, Alabama in the University of Alabama tournament. The squad takes on Austin Peay Friday at 6:30 p.m. and Northeastern Illinois Saturday at noon. Tech will also play on Saturday afternoon and Sunday pending the outcome of the first two games.
