Feb. 28, 2014
LUBBOCK, Texas - Cara Custer tossed six shutout innings while Ashley Fultz connected on her first career home run Friday afternoon to help Texas Tech rebound from a loss earlier in the day and defeat Rhode Island, 5-0, at Rocky Johnson Field.
The win improved the Red Raiders to 11-6 on the season heading into another doubleheader Saturday afternoon against both Rhode Island (0-4) and Sam Houston State once again.
"It was a nice to come back and get a win in that second game," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "We had good pitching all day really and we finally were able to string together a couple hits against Rhode Island. Ashley Fultz gave us a nice boost with her home run which was something we needed today."
Fultz, making the first start of her career at third base, connected on a three-run blast in the fourth that highlighted a four-run inning for the Red Raiders. It was the first career home run for Fultz and the fourth hit by a Red Raider freshman this season.
The four-run inning gave Custer some breathing room as the Red Raiders entered the frame leading 1-0 after Sydni Emanuel scored off a wild pitch in the bottom of the first. It marked the seventh time Tech had scored in the opening inning this season.
Custer (4-3) picked up the win in the circle for the Red Raiders in her best outing of the season where she allowed all four of Rhode Island's hits while striking out six. Chandler Moore came on to pitch a perfect seventh inning in relief.
Custer combined to throw nine shutout innings in two appearances on the day as she previously went three innings in relief during Tech's 2-0 loss to Sam Houston State.
Tech finished with just five hits off Rams starter Ashley Dumoulin (0-2) before Sam Bedore came on in relief following Fultz' home run in the fourth. Bedore tossed 2.1 innings, holding the Red Raiders to no hits while striking out two.
The Red Raiders open their Saturday doubleheader with a 3 p.m. first pitch against the Rams. Tech will face Sam Houston State later in the evening in a 5:30 p.m. start.
