LAS CRUCES, N.M. - The New Mexico State Aggies swept a doubleheader from Texas Tech on Saturday, winning the opening game 3-0 and taking the nightcap, 7-3.

The Aggies took the opening game, 3-0, thanks to a solo home run by Heather Nobbe in the fourth and a two-run single to left by Mel Briggs in the fifth.

Tech could never get anything going against NMSU starter Amber Mosher (4-4), who scattered three hits and struck out one in going the distance.

Amanda Renfro (8-6) suffered the loss, allowing three runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts.

Nobbe's homer was a wind-blown job just inside the left field foul pole on a pitch in her eyes. The run in the fifth came after a leadoff walk and a single, then a bunt back to Renfro, who had no play when first base was uncovered.

Briggs then singled to left to drive in a pair, all the support Mosher would need.

The Red Raiders got off to a much better start in the second contest, with Tracy Cartier doubling down the left field line to open the game. Sandy Butler then lined off the outstretched glove of NMSU shortstop Nobbe, putting runners on the corners.

Butler stole second before Shauna Briggs drove home Cartier with a single to right. Butler scored on a Carmen Grindell sacrifice fly to center, and Briggs came around to score on another sac fly, this one from Ashley Ready.

But the Aggies came back in their half of the first to get four runs, all unearned.

Lizette Olivares was hit by a pitch to start the frame, and Ready's throwing error on a grounder by Amanda Thurmond allowed Olivares to score and Thurmond to move all the way around to third.

Briggs then squeeze bunted home Thurmond. Adrian Nobles belted a two-run homer to left with two outs, giving NMSU a 4-3 advantage.

Briggs added a solo shot in the third for a 5-3 Aggie lead, and NMSU got two more in the fifth for the final margin.

Maggie Ayres (0-2) suffered the loss for Tech, allowing seven runs, two earned, in four plus innings of work. Ayres walked five and struck out three.

Judy Blok settled down after the first, picking up the win while striking out nine. She gave up seven hits and three earned runs and did not walk anyone.

The Red Raiders travel to Tampa, Fla., this weekend to participate in the Speedline Invitational from Thursday through Sunday.
