Raiders Drop Two Games in Arizona Tournament March 6, 1999 Tucson, AZ - Whoever hid the offense needs to tell Texas Tech where to find it. In their four games at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, the Red Raiders have only managed to score eight runs and all eight came in game-two against Notre Dame. In the mornings first match-up, Tech faced #12 Louisiana State and fell to the Tigers 2-0. The Raiders only managed three hits on 24 at-bats. Techs three hits tied a season low (4 games with three hits). With the loss to LSU, Texas Tech fell to 13-13 on the season and 5-9 in early morning games. In game-two of the day, the Red Raiders faced national powerhouse and second ranked Arizona. Arizona came into the game sporting an impressive 18-1 season record and had won its three previous tournament games by the tournament run-rule (lead of 8 runs after 5 innings of play). In the top of the first inning, Arizona went ahead of Tech 1-0 after Lauren Bauer hit an RBI single to score Nicole Giordano. Tech held the Wildcats until the fourth inning when Arizona mustered two runs off an Amy Baray single to put the Wildcats up 3-0. Arizona would get one run in the fifth to bring the final score to 4-0. Texas Tech led a solid defensive effort limiting the high scoring Arizona offense to a tournament low-four runs. In the second inning, senior third base Kim Martinez made a diving foul fly catch into the Arizona dugout to get the second out of the inning and was rewarded by a loud ovation from the 1,250 Wildcat fans on-hand. The Red Raiders (13-14), by virtue of a Notre Dame defeat of Kansas in tonights 6:00 p.m. game, will be the #3 seed and will face #2 seed LSU in an 8:00 a.m (9 CT). match-up on Sunday morning. If the Red Raiders defeat #12 LSU, they will compete for the tournament championship at 12:00 p.m. (1 CT).
**Kim Martinez along with the Red Raiders would like to wish her dad (Joe Martinez) a speedy recovery from his illness.**
