Red Raiders Deliver Another Run-Rule With 11-3 Rout of Troy|
March 10, 2013
LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech broke up a two-run game with nine runs in the third while Gretchen Aucoin tossed her second-straight complete game to lead the Red Raiders to an 11-3 run-rule victory over Troy Sunday at Rocky Johnson Field.
The victory was the second of the day for the Red Raiders, who have now won six of their last seven heading into Monday's tournament finale with Troy (11-13). Tech (18-8) is now 5-1 in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic.
"I thought we played two really good games for the second day in a row," Tech head coach Shanon Hays said. "Our players went to the plate with the right mindset and really attacked the ball and that led to a lot of runs. We'll look to do the same tomorrow against a good Troy ballclub."
After scoring a run in both of the first two innings, Sandy James jump-started Tech's nine-run third inning with a three-run homer to left that scored Mikey Kenney and Shelby Johnson. It was James' fourth home run this season and the second already during the tournament.
The Red Raiders tallied seven-straight hits from there, with Katelyn Williams adding a two-run homer to left followed by back-to-back doubles from Lexie Elkins and Aucoin. Taylor Powell and Samantha Camello also singled and then scored off a double to the gap in left from Kenney.
Kenney finished 2-for-2 at the plate as she also led off the game with a solo home run to right field. It was her eighth home run this season and the third to leadoff a game.
Aucoin, meanwhile, was strong in the circle for the second-straight day as she struck out eight in another complete-game performance. The freshman (4-0) held Troy to just one hit through four innings before the Trojans rallied with five in the fifth for their only three runs.
Michaela Hamilton (1-3) earned the loss for Troy as she surrendered all 11 runs off 14 hits while walking three.
The Red Raiders close the Jeanine McHaney Memorial Classic with one final game against Troy Monday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Rocky Johnson Field.
