SAN DIEGO - Texas Tech (8-18) softball defeated the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State (3-19) 10-0 (6) and 14-3 (5) in an offensive explosion Thursday afternoon on the campus of San Diego State. Pitcher Ashly Jacobs threw her first shutout of the season in game one, and Alex Watkins picked up her first win of the season against the Jackrabbits in game two. Catcher Holley Gentsch went 5-8 with six RBIs on the afternoon, while Leah Legler was 4-5 with four RBI.

Thing started off slow for Texas Tech, as it was unable to get a runner across through the first two innings. In the second, Stephanie Drewry singled and scored on a triple by designated player Jennifer Lee. Tech added two more in the fourth when Gentsch and Skyler Peterson were brought home on a triple by Emily Bledsoe. In the fifth, Watkins singled followed by a Megan Shupp single while Elizabeth Eimen reached on an error. With the bases loaded, Gentsch singled to score Watkins and Peterson singled to score Shupp and Eimen to make the score, 6-0. Legler singled in the sixth and after walks by Karli Merlich and Megan Shupp, scored on a single courtesy of Eimen to up the score to, 7-0. With three on, Gentsch hit a game winning triple to score three runs and end the game at, 10-0.

Gentsch went 3-4 with four RBIs, while Eimen went 2-4 with two RBI. Emily Bledsoe hit 1-3 with a triple and two RBIs, and Drewry went 2-4 with a run scored. Jacobs pitched six shutout innings striking out five to move to 5-8 on the season. In game two, Tech started off right where they left off taking advantage of a Jackrabbit error to go ahead, 2-0. In the fourth, Watkins singled to get things started followed by Danielle Matthews who reached on a fielders choice and Drewry who reached on an error. With the bases juiced, Legler tripled to left field to score to clear the bases and up Tech's lead to, 5-0. Lee followed up with a double to score Legler and give Tech the advantage, 6-0. South Dakota State added two runs of its own in the fourth to make the score, 6-2.

The Red Raiders exploded offensively in the fifth, with eight of the nine players responsible for a run scored. Gentsch singled followed by an Eimen single and Shupp getting hit by a pitch. With the bases loaded, Watkins singled to score Gentsch and Eimen and push Shupp to third. After a Matthews ground out, the next five batters for Tech all singled helping push the lead to, 14-3. Merlich came on in relief of Watkins in the bottom half of the fifth and strike out Stacey Evens to seal the victory for Tech and give Watkins her first victory of 2009. Legler went 3-3 with three RBIs, while Lee and Gentsch each went 2-4 with two RBIs. Watkins went 3-3 with two RBI, two runs scored and striking out three from the circle.
