James' Grand Slam Lifts No. 19 Texas Tech Past Evansville, 5-1
March 12, 2011
LUBBOCK, Texas - Sandy James' grand slam in the bottom of the third broke a 1-1 tie and lifted No. 19 Texas Tech to a 5-1 win over Evansville in the first game of a split doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Rocky Johnson Field.
With the win, Texas Tech improved to 26-1 on the season while Evansville fell to 3-12.
The Red Raiders found themselves trailing when they came to bat in the bottom half of the third inning, as the Purple Aces had jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top half of the frame. Tech answered the scoring by Evansville four at-bats into the frame when third baseman Emily Bledsoe laced a game-tying RBI single to center that scored Mikey Kenney. Kenney reached on a one-out single and moved to third on a single by Stephanie Drewry.
Tech got all the scoring they would need in that half inning as Cydney Allen would draw a walk in the next at-bat to load the bases for first baseman Sandy James. James then blasted a grand slam home run over the fence in center field to give the Red Raiders a 5-1 advantage.
Tech pitcher Brittany Talley held Evansville at bay the rest of the game with three shutout innings to seal the win. Talley went the distance allowing just one run on four hits and struckout five in seven innings of work to improve to 9-1 on the year. Samantha Meyer was tagged with the loss for Evansville as she surrendered all five runs on 10 hits and two walks over six innings.
