March 12, 1998
LUBBOCK, Texas -The Texas Tech fastpitch softball team shutout Bowling Green 4-0 today in the H.I.T. tournament in Spring, Tex. The squad record is now 27-7 on the season. Freshman Amanda Renfro picked up the win for Tech, allowing only three hits while striking out 13 batters. Renfro's record moves to 12-4.
Texas Tech scored all four of their runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jenny Kohler hit a single to left field with two outs to get the ball rolling. Ellen Middleton then got on base on a fielder's choice. Next, Jessica Karenke doubled to right field, scoring Kohler and Middleton. Tamara Harrington kept things alive when she singled to center field to score Jeanette Lanford who was pinch running for Karenke. Christina Munoz's single then scored Harrington before Munoz was thrown out at second base. Bowling Green never answered as the Red Raider's held them scoreless in the bottom of the sixth and the bottom of the seven.
"Amanda Renfro had an absolutely fabulous game," said head coach Renee Luers-Gillispie. "We played hard and were fortunate enough to come out on top, now we have to look ahead to Nebraska. They are ranked 13th in the nation and we've beat them once this weekend. Tomorrow the game will really be a test."
Tomorrow Tech will face No. 13 ranked Nebraska in the semi-finals. The winner of the Texas Tech-Nebraska game will then face the winner from the loser's bracket for the championship game. The tournament is double elimination, so the winner of the losers bracket would have to beat Texas Tech/Nebraska winner twice to clinch the tournament title.
