CLEARWATER, Fla. - Cydney Allen smashed a two-out grand slam at the top of the seventh inning to propel No. 21 Texas Tech to a 5-1 victory over Jacksonville Friday evening in the opener of the USF The Game Tournament at the Eddie C. Moore Complex.
After Jacksonville (16-10) tied the game in the bottom of the sixth, Mikey Kenney got things started for the Red Raiders (31-1) with a two-out single to center that was followed by an infield single from Stephanie Drewry.
Emily Bledsoe was hit by a pitch the next batter to bring Allen to the plate. Following a back-and-forth battle where Allen actually fouled a ball near the fence in left, the junior was able to lift a 2-2 pitch just inside the foul pole in left to give the Red Raiders the lead once again.
Jacksonville was able to get a leadoff single from Karson Tuck to begin the bottom of the seventh, but Tech starter Kelsey Dennis retired the next three hitters in order to secure the win.
Only one pitch stood in the way of a shutout for Dennis (9-0). The junior went the full seven innings, allowing one run off four hits with her only blemish coming off an Amanda Schmidt solo home run with two outs in the sixth inning.
Dennis also struck out six batters in the outing, giving Tech the quality start it needed to continue its stretch of six games in four days.
Tech took a 1-0 lead in the third inning after a throwing error from Schmidt at third allowed Kenney to come all the way around to score from first off an infield single from Drewry.
Sarah Sigrest (8-4) took the loss for Jacksonville in a complete game effort where she allowed five runs, four of which were earned, off six hits. She also walked four batters and added four strikeouts.
