Red Raiders Start Off Doubleheader With 5-1 Victory|
March 19, 2014
LUBBOCK, Texas - Gretchen Aucoin struck out a career-high 13 hitters Wednesday night as Texas Tech opened its doubleheader against North Texas with a 5-1 victory at Rocky Johnson Field.
The victory snapped Tech's previous three-game losing streak while in the process also extending the Red Raiders' home winning streak to nine games heading into the doubleheader finale.
Aucoin (8-3) gave the Tech defense much of the night off with her 13 strikeouts that marked the most for a Red Raider pitcher during the Shanon Hays era (2010-present). She finished two strikeouts shy of Amanda Renfro's single-game school record from the 2001 season.
Each of Aucoin's final five outs came via the strikeout to wrap up her third complete game this season which matches her total from her 2013 freshman campaign.
Aucoin received a four-run lead in the third as the Red Raiders recorded their first hit off North Texas starter Ashley Kirk with a RBI double from Brittany Lee. Sydni Emanuel immediately followed with a double of her own as Tech totaled four of its five hits in the inning.
Lea Hopson scored both Lee and Emanuel with a two-run single to center and then came across herself moments later on a Cassie McClure RBI single up the middle. The Red Raiders added their final run off a North Texas (19-9) error an inning later.
Lee finished 2-for-3 at the plate for the Red Raiders with a two-out single in the sixth inning that marked her second multiple-hit game this season.
Kirk (13-4) took the loss for North Texas in the circle, allowing all five runs, four of which that were earned, before giving way to Lauren Poole to start the fifth inning.
North Texas scored its only run off a Danielle Hoff solo home run in the sixth inning. It was Hoff's fourth home run of the year and one of six hits for the Mean Green.
