Error Proves Costly For Texas Tech|
March 21, 2009
LUBBOCK, Texas - A costly error in the fifth inning to score a Baylor run proved to be the deciding factor in the Lady Bears, 2-1 victory. Tech scored first in the contest, but a second inning home run, coupled with the Red Raider error, dropped Tech to 0-3 in Big 12 Conference play while Baylor begins conference play at 1-0.
Texas Tech (10-25) got on the board first when Leah Legler singled, and advanced to second on a Stephanie Drewry sacrifice error which placed both runners on base. Elizabeth Eimen plated Legler, with a sacrifice bunt fielder's choice which was good for the RBI. The Red Raider rally in the first stalled when Drewry was tagged out on a ground ball and neither Danielle Matthews or Holley Gentsch could convert the opportunity of runners at first and second, Eimen and Alex Watkins, who reached on a fielder's choice when Drewry was out.
Baylor came right back in the second on a solo home run by Courtney Oberg high over the left-field foul pole which knotted the score, 1-1. With the score unchanged through four innings, Baylor picked up the winning run when Meagan Weldon opened the frame with a double. Sophia Lujan came in to run for Weldon. An out later, Tiffany Wesley knocked a single to put runners at the corners. When Wesley broke for second and got in an infield pickle (not a dill), Lujan was tagged out by the Tech second basemen, Legler, on the play as Lujan tried to score. Legler spun around and attempted to throw out Wesley who was rounding second and heading for third. The throw was errant, sailed into left field and got by everyone allowing Wesley to scamper home.
Baylor pitcher Whitney Canion came on strong in the latter innings preventing a Red Raider rally, securing the victory for the Lady Bears, 2-1, and picking up her 13th win of the season.
Ashly Jacobs moves to 7-12 on the season, pitching a complete game and striking out just one batter. Legler, Watkins, and Gentsch each singled for the Red Raiders.
Texas Tech will close out the series with Baylor tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. CT, at Rocky Johnson Field. Fans can follow the action live at www.texastech.com
