Softball Falls to Stanford
March 21, 1998
STANFORD, CA --- Fourteenth-ranked Stanford (17-4) increased its winning streak to seven games by sweeping No. 23 Texas Tech (32-10) 2-0 and 3-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Stanford Softball Complex. The doubleheader was played after a 45-minute rain delay pushed back the start of game one.
In the opener, junior Becky Blevins (Lake Havasu City, AZ/Horizon HS) threw a complete game two-hit shutout to pace the Cardinal. Blevins walked one and struck out three, and allowed only one baserunner over the final four innings.
The Cardinal took the lead for good when sophomore Kellie Wiginton (Fresno, CA/Bullard HS) scored from third on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Stanford added an insurance run in the sixth when junior Michelle Schenider (Los Alamitos, CA/Los Alamitos HS) tripled and scored on junior Michele Acosta's (Tucson, AZ/University HS) single.
Junior Jennie Foyle (Orange, CA/El Modena HS) had two of Stanford's five hits in the opener, while junior Stephanie Walls (Albuquerque, NM/ Univ. of New Mexico) and sophomore Tamara Harrington (Broken Arrow, OK) each singled for the Red Raiders.
In the nightcap, Texas Tech jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on a run-scoring double by senior Jessica Karenke (Moline, IL/Lincoln CC), who had two of the Red Raiders' four hits, and an RBI single from Walls.
The Cardinal later cut the lead to 2-1 on an RBI single by Acosta in the fourth, and took the lead for good with two in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Marcy Crouch (Huntington Beach, CA/Marina HS), who was also the winning pitcher, tied it with an RBI single and freshman Jenni Shidler (San Jose, CA/Leland HS) drove in the winning run with a ground out to shortstop that scored Schneider.
